The Continuing Dental Education Trust Auckland – (CDE Trust)
Formerly The Dental Advisory Committee of the Post Graduate Medical Committee of the University of Auckland.
History
Well before continuing education accreditation existed there was a shortage of courses available. The Dental Advisory Committee (DAC) was established in 1968 and apart from the occasional branch lecture no other body was providing continuing dental education on a regular basis.
Subsequently the faculty in Dunedin special societies and local branches ran courses. These were held once, occasionally twice a year.
The industry sponsored these courses and in return often had stands at the entrance. Very few of these courses covered the unpopular topics. These were perceived as less exciting and not “cutting edge.” DAC “filled the gap” with courses on Pharmacology, Medicine, TMJ and Periodontics. Speakers were often from further afield, Scandinavia, Europe or UK. Sometimes these courses ran at a loss, however often they had large attendance and addressed issues commonly accounted in everyday general practices.
DAC has contributed significantly financially to the Recent Graduate Development Programme and regularly to the NZDA Education Trust.
The new organisation of CDE
The situation has changed. The NZDA Special Societies with the exception of Endodontic and Sedation have largely withdrawn from running courses.
The NZDA Education trust has expanded to meet some of the demand. The biggest increase in courses however has been from the Dental Industry. These are prolific; however the speakers are not always independent.
The CDE Trust will maintain its goal of providing education of dental practitioners and as appropriate of others involved in the practice of dentistry and the oral health of the people of NZ.
The trust may also provide funding of research into any area of dental practice and oral health.
As we are planning 12-18 months in advance we welcome feedback from the dental profession. If you have topics of interest or suitable speakers you have heard that may be suitable. Please contact us.
